Design of Acoustic Metamaterials Based on Liquid Crystal Skyrmions
The disclosure deals with a system and method for the design of acoustic metamaterials based on liquid crystal skyrmions. Noise attenuation, sound focusing, and harvesting acoustic wave energy are challenging issues that the technological community currently faces. The disclosed thermodynamically driven metamaterial facilitates the design of unique architectures with several acoustic applications, including sound attenuation and acoustic energy harvesting. This disclosed structure includes spherical shells in a hexagonal arrangement (or cubic), which can be designed in any size and additively manufactured for end use applications.
The disclosed system and methodology enable coexistence of networking and sensing on next-generation millimeter-wave (mmWave) picocells for traffic monitoring and pedestrian safety at intersections in all weather conditions. Existing wireless signal-based object detection systems suffer from limited resolution, and their outputs may not provide sufficient discriminatory information in complex scenes, such as traffic intersections. The disclosed system uses 5G picocells, which operate at mmWave frequency bands and provide higher data rates and higher sensing resolution than traditional wireless technology. It is difficult to run sensing applications and data transfer simultaneously on mmWave devices due to potential interference. MmWave devices are vulnerable to weak reflectivity and specularity challenges which may result in loss of information about objects and pedestrians. To address such challenges, the disclosed design uses customized deep learning models that not only can recover missing information about the target scene but also enable coexistence of networking and sensing.

The disclosure relates to methodology and apparatus for a non-coherent over-the-air computation (OAC) methodology to calculate the majority vote (MV) reliably in fading channel. The disclosed approach relies on modulating the amplitude of the elements of complementary sequences (CSs) based on the sign of the parameters to be aggregated. Since the disclosed method does not use channel state information at the nodes, it is compatible with time-varying channels. The methodology is useful for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) guided by distributed sensors based on the MV computed with the method. The method improves the computation error rate with a longer sequence length in fading channel while maintaining the peak-to-mean-envelope power ratio of the transmitted orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals to be less than or equal to 3 dB.

Massively parallel systems and methods are described suitable for high throughput and large-scale production of highly consistent nanoparticles. The systems include a device that utilizes a single pump to pump a reaction mixture simultaneously through multiple formation channels. One or more devices can be utilized in a single production line, and a system can include multiple production lines. A device of a system provides essentially identical interaction conditions throughout the multiple channels with highly controllable and consistent pumping conditions to provide well-controlled and consistent flow conditions in the channels. This consistency allows for well-defined reaction formation chemistry and thereby provides highly consistent nanoparticle products in large quantities in a short time period.
A hyperspectral imaging apparatus based on a monolithic or free space optical spatial heterodyne spectrometer (SHS) design, array detector, electromagnetic radiation source, and optical collection element is described. The apparatus enables the simultaneous acquisition of spatially isolated Fizeau fringe patterns, each having an encoded light product that is decoded to produce a spectral fingerprint of the interrogated object. Features specific to the SHS, such as a large entrance aperture, large acceptance angle, and no moving parts, enable a variety of optical collection schemes including lens arrays, solid-core and hollow core waveguides, and others. In one example, a microlens array (MLA) is configured with the hyperspectral imaging apparatus to simultaneously image many hundred spatially isolated Fizeau fringe patterns while interrogating an object using an electromagnetic radiation source. Each Fizeau fringe pattern recorded by the array detector is decoded to produce a full Raman or laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) spectrum. Compared to prior art, the hyperspectral imaging apparatus overcomes the primary limitations of needing to trade time resolution for both spectral and spatial data density because the imaging apparatus simultaneously acquires both spectral and special information. Based on the selection and configuration of diffraction gratings, the grating aperture size, Littrow wavelength (i.e., heterodyne wavelength), and optical collection configuration, the apparatus can be tailored to produced low or high spectral resolution with a spectral bandpass that covers a portion or the entire Raman spectral range (up to 4200 cm−1) and for LIBS as well.
Methodology and corresponding apparatus pertain to human sleep posture monitoring, using a wireless signal-based monitoring system leveraging millimeter-wave technology. A software-only human sleep posture monitoring solution based on millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless-based solutions enables fine-grained posture monitoring under no light without being privacy-invasive. In zero visibility, body joint information and changes can be extracted directly from mmWave imaging using improved capabilities for extracting human sleep posture data from millimeter-wave wireless systems. A single-person sleep posture monitoring system leverages signal processing and deep learning models to enable fine-grained monitoring continuously and non-intrusively with commodity (i.e., generally available) mmWave devices. The system directly predicts joint locations from reflected mmWave signals by learning the hidden association between them from thousands of data samples. Learning is accomplished through a customized Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN), that predicts the 3D locations of several key body joints from the reflected signals captured by multiple mmWave antennas.

Method and system subject matter deals with predicting delirium in patients. As many as 80% of critically ill patients develop delirium increasing the need for institutionalization and resulting in higher morbidity and mortality. Clinicians detect less than 40% of delirium when using a validated screening tool. EEG is the criterion standard but is resource intensive thus not feasible for widespread delirium monitoring. This disclosure uses limited-lead rapid-response EEG and supervised deep learning methods with vision transformer to predict delirium. Vision transformer with rapid-response EEG is capable of predicting delirium. Such monitoring is feasible in critically ill older adults, for improving delirium detection accuracy, and providing greater opportunity for individualized interventions. Benefits may shorten hospital length of stay, increase discharge to home, decrease mortality, and reduce the financial burden associated with delirium.

CHIRP-BASED OVER-THE-AIR COMPUTATION FOR PRIVACY-PRESERVING DISTRIBUTED LOCALIZATION
The disclosure deals with method and system for an over-the-air computation (OAC) approach for privacy-preserving localization in a sensor network. The disclosed approach relies on a voting-based distributed localization and the computation of the majority votes (MVs) with OAC. In this method, the anchor node (AN)'s votes encoding the potential location of a server node (SN) are mapped to a circularly-shifted chirp (CSC) signal and all AN simultaneously transmit their CSC signals. The aggregated signal is received at the SN and the MV votes are detected non-coherently without requiring an ideal time-synchronization or channel state information (CSI). We further disclose an iterative refinement procedure to increase the localization performance. The CSCs result in spectral-efficient and power-efficient transmission, while disclosed iterative refinements and repetitions decrease the gap between the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and the quantization bound.
The disclosure deals with methodology and system subject matter for a low-cost and portable millimeter-wave software-defined radio (SDR) which supports wireless experimentation in the 60 GHz band. The SDR uses a homodyne transceiver and provides a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)-based interface for companion computer (CC)-based baseband signal processing. To address the large difference between the processing speed of the CC and the sample rate of analog-to-digital converters, we use a disclosed method, called waveform-triggered reception (WTR), where a hard-coded block detects a special trigger waveform to acquire a predetermined number of in-phase/quadrature (IQ) data samples upon the detection. A buffer mechanism is used to support discontinuous transmissions. Using both the WTR and discontinuous transmissions, we can conduct a beam sweeping experiment, to evaluate 4096 beam pairs rapidly without compromising the flexibility of the CC-based processing.

Method and apparatus detect structural damage of structures using Acoustic Emission (AE) sensors. Using our method, structures can be monitored in real-time to predict damage level. This damage level assessment can be used to plan repairs and restorations of structures. Application can be used with concrete, and also applied to other materials such as composites. Predictive AE models may be tuned for determining structural damage zones, with the method extendable into any number of zones. An algorithm may be used in conjunction with decision tree filtering to use AE to predict structural damage zones, with the system able to perform analysis in real-time.
A mixer for mixing contents of a vessel includes a rotational mechanism with an attached gearbox. First and second shafts are coaxial with each other and attached to the gearbox. The gearbox is configured to rotate the first shaft and the second shaft in opposite directions. First and second rotors are rotated, respectively, in opposite directions by the first and second shafts. A housing encloses the gearbox and extends downward from the gearbox to just above the two contra-rotating first and second rotors (or impellers). The housing directs air (or other gas, liquid, or fluid) downward. Openings at the top of the housing admit air which is forced to the bottom of the housing by additional air impellers fastened to the outer of the two shafts. Lower housing openings allow aerated air to exit into desired material, such as fluid or solid/liquid mixture.

A system and method concerns accurate bearing fault diagnosis and prognosis (FDP), critical for optimal maintenance schedules, safety and reliability. Existing methods face challenges: the bearing condition is healthy in most of the service time, so it is critical to detect the occurrence of faults and the start point for prognosis in real applications. Due to differences in manufacturing quality, assembly quality, and different operating conditions, it is difficult to describe the fault dynamic using one single fault model. A hybrid Bayesian estimation-based bearing FDP framework with fault detection and automatic fault model selection is disclosed. A convolutional neural network is used to detect fault and select the appropriate fault dynamic model. To improve performance with different bearings under different operating conditions, continuous wavelet coefficient matrices power spectrum of vibration are fused with operating conditions to build information maps for fault detection and model selection. After a fault is detected, a Bayesian estimation based FDP method is triggered to estimate the fault state and predict the remaining useful life. In the prognostic process, Dempster-Shafer theory is employed to fuse prediction results from different models if necessary.

ASSIGNING TRUST RATING TO AI SERVICES USING CAUSAL IMPACT ANALYSIS
A method and system relates to assigning ratings (i.e., labels) to convey the trustability of AI systems grounded in its cause-and-effect behavior of significant inputs and outputs of the AI. Sentiment Analysis Systems (SASs) are data-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that, given a piece of text, assign a score conveying the sentiment and emotion intensity. The present disclosure uses the approach that protected attributes like gender and race influence the output (sentiment) given by SASs or if the sentiment is based on other components of the textual input, e.g., chosen emotion words. The presently disclosed rating methodology assigns ratings at fine-grained and overall levels, to rate SASs grounded in a causal setup, and provides an open-source implementation of both SASs—two deep-learning based, one lexicon-based, and two custom-built models—for this rating implementation. This allows users to understand the behavior of SAS in real-world applications.

COMPUTER-AIDED PROCESS PLANNING (CAPP) FOR AUTOMATED FIBER PLACEMENT (AFP) MANUFACTURING
Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) manufacturing with carbon fiber composites is increasingly used for complex and/or large structures. Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) software supports process planning for AFP manufacturing to assist identifying optimal starting point location and layup strategy for each laminate ply. Ply optimization functions on measurement and scoring of geometry-based defects (gaps, overlaps, angle deviation, and steering). CAPP mitigates defect stacking through the laminate thickness by generating best ply scenarios and comparing ply defects to identify regions where defects are stacking up. Stacked defects frequency and severity are described using a disclosed scoring system, so process planners can craft fiber paths that mitigate the number and compounding effect of laminate geometry-based defects. Defects can be minimized in the process planning phase by optimizing the selection of input parameters such as starting points, layup strategies, and tows per course, using surrogate-based methods.
Evaluating railway ballast fouling condition is critical to assessing track conditions and arranging proper ballast maintenance. Because fouled ballast materials with different fouling conditions have different material properties, these properties can be used to evaluate the fouling severity. Various previously developed approaches to estimating fouling conditions often require special sensors or equipment, and well-trained technicians. Recently, convolutional neural network (CNN) based computer vision approaches have performed particle segmentation to obtain ballast grain size distribution. While the coarse aggregate fraction can be evaluated, many such approaches do not segment fine particles. This disclosure is an image analysis approach to directly estimate the ballast fouling conditions. First, fouled ballast images with different fouling conditions are taken as the reference. Then, the RGB color distributions of the fouled ballast images are processed through statistical analysis. A strong linear correlation between Fouling Index (FI) and Variance is found and used to establish an FI prediction model which has been tested and validated by additional fouled ballast samples.
A digital over-the-air computation (OAC) scheme achieves continuous-valued (analog) aggregation for federated edge learning (FEEL). The average of a set of real-valued parameters can be calculated approximately by using the average of the corresponding numerals, where the numerals are obtained based on a balanced number system. By exploiting this key property, local stochastic gradients are encoded into a set of numerals. Next, positions of the activated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers are determined by using the values of the numerals. To eliminate the need for a precise sample-level time synchronization, channel estimation overhead, and power instabilities due to the channel inversion, a non-coherent receiver is used at the edge server (ES) and pre-equalization at the edge devices (EDs) is not used. To improve the test accuracy of FEEL with the presently disclosed method, we introduce the concept of adaptive absolute maximum (AAM). Numerical results show test accuracy can reach up to 98% for heterogeneous data distribution using presently disclosed scheme with AAM for FEEL.

METHODOLOGY AND GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE FOR NDE/SHM USING TWO-STAGE COMPRESSIVE SENSING
The disclosure deals with a system and method for Compressive Sensing, which has been shown to greatly reduce data acquisition and processing burdens by providing mathematical guarantees for accurate signal recovery from far fewer samples than conventionally needed. A generalized Compressive Sensing methodology developed for automated reduction of non-destructive evaluation/structural health monitoring (NDE/SHM) data is effective for multiple types of NDE/SHM systems. The methodology uses Compressive Sensing at two stages in the data acquisition and analysis process to detect damage. The two stages are: (1) temporally undersampled sensor signals from (2) spatially undersampled sensor arrays, resulting in faster data acquisition and reduced data sets without any loss in damage detection ability. In addition, a graphical user interface helps guide and visualize the associated data reconstruction process.
In the past, several microchannel configurations were developed to realize two-phase cooling for high-power electronics, but these were limited to small devices with sizes at ˜cm length. It has been a challenge to implement effective two-phase cooling to large devices with a length of ˜10 cm due to notorious scaling effects. Here, we devised a novel channel configuration to achieve effective two-phase cooling on devices with an area of ˜10 cm by ˜5 cm or larger, which is the prevailing size of major commercial electronics and power electronics devices. In a lab environment, we demonstrated that the novel channel configuration can meet their cooling needs.
Disclosed methodology assesses the existence of disparate impact in internet markets that serve geographically dispersed consumers. Implementations of the method can collect unbiased offering (e.g., pricing and/or other fees and costs) data for a large number of products and geographic areas, so that marketing decisions, such as price, recommendations, and delivery fees can be matched to consumer demographic data from established sources such as censuses and large scale surveys. The combined data can then be used to investigate the presence and nature of disparate impact and can be used by internet platforms and retailers to audit their algorithms for disparate impact without collecting or holding the demographic data of their own users. Thus, a methodology is provided for the collection of data required to study the extent to which algorithms in internet markets may induce disparities across demographic consumer groups and whether disparities can be justified by valid interests.
Chemically inert, mechanically tough, cationic metallo-polyelectrolytes designed as durable anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cobaltocenium-containing cyclooctene with triazole as the only linker group, followed by backbone hydrogenation to provide a new class of AEMs with a polyethylene-like framework and alkaline-stable cobaltocenium cation for ion transport, which exhibit excellent thermal, chemical and mechanical stability, as well as high ion conductivity.

FACIAL RECOGNITION BASED ON CONVERTED SPIKING NEURAL NETWORK
The disclosure deals with a system and method recognizing the same person from different pictures in order to identify who is who based on photos or videos from different sources. Facial recognition plays an increasingly important role in modern life. Due to the low power consumption of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), this disclosure proposed an SNNs-based facial recognition model converted from a well-known facial recognition network ArcFace. The experimental results show that SNN (duration=200) achieved 99.00% overall accuracy on the testing dataset and outperformed the original ArcFace.

LEBESGUE SAMPLING-BASED DEEP BELIEF NETWORK FOR LITHIUM-ION BATTERY DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS
Fault diagnosis and prognosis (FDP) is critical for ensuring system reliability and reducing operation and maintenance (O&M) costs. Lebesgue sampling based FDP (LS-FDP) is an event-based approach with the advantages of cost-efficiency, uncertainty management, and less computation. In previous works, LS-FDP approaches are mainly model-based. However, fault dynamic modeling is difficult and time consuming for some complex systems and this severely hinders the applications of LS-FDP. To address this problem, this present disclosure presents a data-driven based LS-FDP framework in which deep belief networks (DBN) and particle filter (PF) are integrated to achieve fault state estimation and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction. In the proposed approach, DBN learns the state evolution model and the Lebesgue time transition model, which are used as diagnostic and prognostic models in PF for FDP. The proposed approach has higher efficiency in terms of computation and better performance in terms of FDP accuracy and precision.

MULTI-CELL NON-COHERENT OVER-THE-AIR COMPUTATION FOR FEDERATED EDGE LEARNING
A system and method are disclosed for a framework where over-the-air computation (OAC) occurs in both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), sequentially, in a multi-cell environment to address the latency and the scalability issues of federated edge learning (FEEL). To eliminate the channel state information (CSI) at the edge devices (EDs) and edge servers (ESs) and relax the time-synchronization requirement for the OAC, we use a non-coherent computation scheme, i.e., orthogonal signaling based majority vote (MV). Multiple ESs function as the aggregation nodes in the UL. Each ES determines the MVs independently. After the ESs broadcast the detected MVs, the EDs determine the sign of the gradient through another OAC in the DL. Hence, inter-cell interference is exploited for the OAC. Convergence of the non-convex optimization problem for the FEEL is proven with the proposed OAC framework. Efficacy of the proposed method is numerically evaluated by comparing the test accuracy in both multi-cell and single-cell scenarios for both homogeneous and heterogeneous data distributions.

Deep learning-based diagnosis methods currently face some challenges and open problems. First, domain knowledge of fault modes and operating conditions are not integrated in most existing approaches, which results in low diagnosis accuracy and training efficiency. Second, existing methods treat all features with indiscriminate attention, which causes unnecessary computation and even false diagnosis results in some cases. Third, multi-task diagnosis becomes more important for health maintenance. To address these challenges, a deep residual convolutional neural network is provided with an enhanced discriminate feature learning capability and information fusion for multi-task bearing fault diagnosis. Domain knowledge is integrated with monitoring data to build the information map. Two attention modules are introduced to enhance the discriminate feature learning ability, and two classifiers are employed for multi-task diagnosis, providing significant improvements in diagnostic accuracy and training efficiency.
Presently disclosed subject matter relates to application of dielectric barrier discharge in misty plasma systems for disinfection of surfaces and equipment in health settings. A system and corresponding and/or associated methodology is provided for planar dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) device technology. Per one exemplary embodiment, a DBD device is provided with an electrically insulated annular flow channel built through the planar powered electrode. The discharge medium is air saturated with water vapor that flows through the annulus and forms a stagnation discharge plane between the powered dielectric and the substrate. Application on Escherichia (E.) coli and Bacillus (B.) atrophaeus spores on agar and filter papers show that usage of a flowing humid discharge medium has a ˜40% higher efficacy than either a static or a dry flowing medium. The substrate turns acidic potentially due to the formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. In the presence of water vapor, pH can be decreased further due to formation of hydrogen peroxide from recombination of OH radicals formed in the plasma.

DIELECTRIC BARRIER DISCHARGE PLASMA SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR IN-SITU HYDROGEN PEROXIDE PRODUCTION
The disclosure deals with system/apparatus and corresponding and/or associated method for an open plasma reactor assembly provided to study pulsed reactive species produced in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in He—H2O and He—H2O—O2 mixture in atmospheric conditions using photo fragmentation laser-induced fluorescence (PFLIF). The objective is to detect and quantify hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide produced in the DBD. An OH laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) signal is acquired from LIF (using 282 nm laser) whereas LIF from OH generated from H2O2 is measured by from the PFLIF signal (using 213 nm+ 282 nm lasers). A known concentration of H2O2 in He serves to calibrate for H2O2 while the OH is calibrated with a chemical model. For both gas mixtures, there is both OH and H2O2 production in the discharge, while the H2O2 concentration was noticeably increased for the added O2 case.
