In the intake region, the bottom wall (140) of the race has a portion (50) that defines a slope that descends in the downstream direction, of adjustable inclination, such that a pivoting flap, which has an upstream end (62) the position of which can move between a relatively low first position away from the vanes (24) of the wheel (10) and a relatively higher position closer to the path of the vanes of the wheel. The position of this upstream end (62) determines the level at which the water admitted to the machine enters. The slope of the adjustable wall portion (50) allows the stream of water admitted to be accelerated by giving it a chosen orientation. The adjustable wall portion or flap (50) has a bottom end (48) from which the stream of water enters between the vanes of the wheel at the end of the intake zone. An adjusting member allows the flap (50) to be altered to suit the desired operating conditions.
