The present disclosure relates to methods and apparatuses for producing radioisotopes in a nuclear reactor. The methods and apparatuses employ a target mixture or a target assembly that includes two or more neutron targets and a gamma radiation target. The neutron targets interact with high thermal neutron flux to produce prompt gamma radiation, which irradiates the gamma radiation target to form a radioisotope of interest. The methods and apparatuses of the present disclosure offer avenues to improve the production of critical radioisotopes including but not limited to Ac-225 and Tc-99m.

A target interface skid (TIS) transports radioisotopes out of an isotope production system which irradiates an irradiation target in a nuclear reactor to produce a radioisotope for medical or research purposes. The TIS has a radiation shielded structure. It receives, assays, sorts and monitors the irradiation targets. An assaying device within the shielded structure performs a radiological assay of each irradiation target to identify the isotope of the irradiation target. A sorting device within the shielded device sorts the irradiation targets into containers. A removal device removes the container. Also provided are methods of handling, receiving, assaying, sorting and monitoring the targets.

Methods and apparatus for inspecting reactor pressure tubes
An apparatus and method for determining terminal solid solubility temperature in materials capable of forming hydrides, such as reactor pressure tubes. An inspection device is positioned within the reactor pressure tube under test and a pair of annular seals are radially deployed to seal a section of the pressure tube. Any water within the sealed section is displaced through the injection of gas and the heating of the sealed section to dry the tube and the device. A probe assembly on the device is deployed to contact the interior surface of the pressure tube and measure resistivity changes in the pressure tube wall as a function of temperature. The probe assembly includes a thermocouple probe for measuring temperature and transmit and receive coils for inducing eddy currents within the pressure tube wall. The pressure tube is allowed to cool at a predetermined rate, is reheated at a predetermined rate, and is allowed to cool again. Discontinuities within the temperature coefficient of resistivity indicate terminal solid solubility temperatures of precipitation or dissolution, which may be used to determine the hydrogen concentration of the sealed section of reactor pressure tube.
